We have decided to make a post comprising the best day time bad breath battling techniques, none of which require a toothbrush!
Drink More Water
Often times when we suggest that our patients drink more water in order to battle bad breath we are met with strange stares. It seems many people are unaware of the role staying hydrated can play in the state of your breath throughout the day.
Water is a natural facilitator for the production of saliva in your mouth. It just so happens that water is your mouth’s natural defence against bacteria. When you stay hydrated you saliva does something amazing to bacteria. It has the ability to keep portions of the little bad breath causing soldiers temporarily suspended in a type of liquid prison. When you swallow, those portions of trapped bacteria are then sent down into your digestive tract. Your digestive tract is much better suited for effectively handling bacteria than your teeth and gums are.
To make a long story short, staying hydrated helps you mouth keeps its defences at their highest. A wet mouth means a mouth that is ready to do battle with bad breath causing bacteria. A bacteria population that is kept in check in your mouth means your breath will be all the less offensive. So the next time you are feeling thirsty, skip that third cup of coffee or that bottle of soda and reach for a glass of water. You’ll be surprised just how much it will help the state of your breath throughout the day.
Flash Clean With Mouthwash
If you are really looking to throw a wrench in the works of bad breath then carry around a travel size bottle of alcohol-free, antibacterial mouthwash with you.
After meals or snacks, if the urge to freshen your breath hits you, simply step into the nearest bathroom and give your mouth a quick swish. Mouthwash does two amazing things that can really help fight bad breath. On is it loosens trapped food particles that may be sitting in the spaces between your teeth. Those food particles, if left to sit, would soon turn to plaque. Plaque is one of the major causes of bad breath.
Mouthwash also has the ability to give your entire mouth a quick, overhaul flash cleaning. Bad breath causing bacteria do not just live on your teeth and gums. They actually thrive in all areas of your mouth, including your throat, cheeks and tongue. Believe it or not, your tongue is actually where most of the bacteria causing bad breath are setting up shop in your mouth.
Think of the bacteria in your mouth as being the flames in a campfire. Now think of mouthwash as a bucket of water. When you rinse with bacteria it’s like tossing a bucket of water over the flames in a blazing campfire. It may not put the fire entirely out and there are going to be hot coals left over that, if given the chance, will set fire again. These coals are the reason it’s very important to practice good oral hygiene by brushing regularly.
