Today the staff at Triad Dentistry and dental implants dentist Dr. Hatcher want to give you a few tips toward taking care of your dental implants in a way not many people think about; with your diet.
Our patients are always thrilled with the results of their new smiles due to dental implants. In facts, once the quick two-step process of implantation has been completed many patients, especially those financing their own treatment, seek out ways to care for their dental implants other than just brushing and flossing. Luckily there are various ways to care for dental implants, and nearly all the advice you have been given about caring for your natural teeth will apply to dental implants as well. The basic foundation for a successful dental implant is to maintain oral hygiene and a strong, healthy jawbone. That being said, one of the best ways to supplement these two factors is by examining the food you eat every day. If you are interested in caring for your teeth in more ways than just brushing and flossing, we suggest you take a quick look at this list of smile friendly foods.
Fruits and Veggies
Nope we’re not concerned with your waistline over here. When we suggest you eat more fruits and veggies we are doing so strictly with your teeth in mind. Fruits and veggies contain something called fiber. Fiber is a natural facilitator of saliva in your mouth. It just so happens that saliva is your mouth’s natural defence against bacteria.
When you eat fruits and veggies your mouth isn’t just watering because they taste so good. It’s watering because saliva is being made and that means bacteria is being trapped in that saliva. When you swallow, those portions of trapped bacteria are sent down into your digestive tract where they are dealt with properly. Your digestive system in much better equipped at properly handling bacteria than your teeth and gums are.
Foods Rich in Calcium
As stated above, your jawbone is one of the key factors in determining your dental implant’s success. As its name suggests, your jawbone is a bone. Calcium is a vitamin known to supplement the strength and health of bones. because of this fact, your jawbone, as well as your dental implant, will benefit from an increase of calcium in your daily diet.
Luckily there are plenty of foods that pack quite the calcium rich kick. Dairy products like milk, cheese and yogurt are chock full of calcium. Even low-fat milk will do the trick.
of you happen to be lactose intolerant, fear not, there are still plenty of options available to you. Many non-dairy foods contain a ton of calcium. Broccoli, bok choy, collard greens and white beans are just a few. Calcium can also be taken in the form of a daily vitamin.
Regardless of how you choose to get more fruits, veggies and calcium into your daily diet your teeth and dental implants will thank you.
Until next time readers, keep smiling.
