What are Dental Implants?

The Greensboro, NC patients of Dr. Steven Hatcher know that dental implants are the most natural-looking, comfortable, and convenient tooth restoration treatment for missing teeth. Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are implanted into the jawbone during a surgical procedure. These titanium tooth roots are then topped with an abutment which is then fitted with a replacement tooth that is carefully crafted to match your own set of natural teeth. If you are missing one or more teeth and want a tooth restoration treatment that is comfortable and comes without any moving parts, read on to learn more about dental implants.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants come with many benefits that cannot be matched by other forms of tooth restoration, such as dentures. Dental implants are highly sought because they never need to be removed for cleaning and allow the patient to enjoy all the same foods they could with their natural teeth. Dental implants are surgically fused with the patient’s jawbone giving them the stability and feel of natural teeth. While dentures can look artificial, the replacement teeth attached to dental implants are carefully sculpted to match the patient’s natural teeth to the point where they are virtually indistinguishable. The Dental Implants Process

The dental implant process can vary from patient to patient. If a patient does not have the necessary jawbone or gum structure, they may have to undergo bone grafting or soft tissue augmentation in order to have the foundation needed to support dental implants. If everything checks out during your consultation, an appointment for surgery is scheduled.

If the patient has adequate jawbone and gum tissue to support the implants, they undergoe oral surgery to insert the artificial tooth roots. With the patient placed under anesthesia, Dr. Steven Hatcher will make small incisions into the gums to expose the jawbone. The titanium tooth roots will then be screwed into the jawbone and the gums will be closed with stitches. Finally, the patient will be fitted with a temporary crown or similar restoration for the duration of the healing process.

The reason the healing process is so long for dental implants is because of the process of osseointegration. Osseointegration is the process where the gums and jawbone heal around the implants, accepting them as a natural piece of the body. It is this process that makes dental implants feel as strong and natural as your original teeth. Once osseointegration is complete, the patient can then return to the office and Dr. Hatcher will attach the replacement teeth to the implant. The replacement tooth or teeth will then be polished to a perfect shine and the patient can then go out and share their new, complete smile with the world.
