Are you a Candidate for Dental Implants with Dr. Steven Hatcher in Greensboro?

A good candidate for dental implants is a patient in good dental and overall physical health. During a consultation with Dr. Hatcher, the patient will be assessed to determine whether they have adequate jawbone and gum tissue to support the implants. If not, Dr. Hatcher can assess the patient to see if bone grafting or soft tissue augmentation surgery can be performed to give the patient the needed foundation for replacement teeth. The patient must also be free of gum disease and tooth decay which can lower the success rate of the dental implant procedure.

Bone Grafting and Soft Tissue Augmentation for Dental Implants

Not having sufficient jawbone structure or  having inadequate gum tissue resulting from gum recession does not automatically deny dental implants to prospective patients. For these patients, bone grafting or soft tissue augmentation may be the answer to their problems. Both of these procedures can fix these deficiencies giving the patient the required foundation for dental implants.

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that takes part of another bone in the patients body (usually the hip) and grafts it to the jawbone. There are some cases where synthetic bone can be used instead. This surgery is usually done a few months before the dental implant surgery so that there is ample time for the area to heal and strengthen to the point where it can accept the implants.

For patients without sufficient gum tissue to support implants, soft tissue augmentation may be performed. For this oral surgery procedure, soft tissue is taken from the roof of the mouth and used to build up any gums that have receded. By building up these gums, they will be more ready to support dental implants when the time comes.
